SKIN TAGS

Skin tags also know as acrochordons are non-cancerous growths on your skin. They look like a cluster of skin tissue extending from a tiny stem attached to your skin. They tend to be the same colour as your skin but they can also be darker and resemble a raised mole. Skin tags can measure from between 1 – 5 mm and some can grow as large as a few cm.

Skin tags do not affect your health in any way, but can affect your self-esteem and make you self-conscious especially if they are on your face and neck.

Skin tags occur when your body produces extra collagen cells, a type of protein found throughout the body and blood vessels. They generally grow in folds and areas where there is friction.

The most common areas are:

  • Armpits
  • Eyelids
  • Groin or thighs
  • Neck
  • Under the breasts
  • Genitals

The likelihood of developing skin tags increases with age. You may also be at risk if you have a family history of skin tags. Have diabetes, are obese, have skin disorders, experience high levels of growth factors which could occur during pregnancy.
